Demo Version (2005) [Ver. 1]
[Warner]
I watched the women stare
When I went out with you
But still I've been too scared
To do what I had to do
Your love has been so pure
All I've been is immature
But, baby, now I'm sure I've found the cure
I'm gonna make things right
Tomorrow can start tonight
We're starting right now, baby
So honey give me your hand
I've got some dreams to make true
I've got the future all planned
It's time to get serious
It's time to get serious with you
[Elle]
I never thought that I-
[Warner, spoken]
Uh, honey, I'm not finished yet
[Elle]
Oh, sorry. Go ahead
[Warner / Elle]
Since I was two or three /
Yeah
My life was planned out neat /
Uh huh
I'd get a law degree /
Yeah
And then win my Senate seat
A big, white house back east /
Mmmhmm
All of the ammenities
Mmmhmm
Three kids, at least
[Both]
Just like the Kennedy's
[Warner / Elle]
Here's where our lives begin /
Our lives begin
But just where do you fit in? /
Fit me in!
I'll break it down, now, baby
Oh, baby, give me your hand /
Here's my hand, here's my hand
I've got some dreams to make true /
We both have dreams to make true
I know that you'll understand /
Oh yes, I understand
[Both]
It's time to get serious
It's time to get serious
[Warner]
With...
Serious
Gotta wake up and take our journey
Serious
I'm telling you as a future attorney
[Warner / Elle]
You want the moon and sky? /
Yes!
Then take it, don't be shy /
Okay!
Baby, that's why and I /
You and I
Should break up
[Elle, sung]
So baby give your hand
Now all my dreams have come-
[spoken]
You're breaking up with me?
I thought you were proposing
[Warner, spoken]
Proposing?
Pooh bear, my family expects a lot from me
I'm going to Harvard Law School
And my brother's at Yale Law
So is his fiancee!
And she's a Vanderbelt for Christ's sake
[Elle]
And I'm from Malibu!
Dick Clark was our neighbour
I'm not exactly trailer trash
[Warner]
Elle, if I'm going to be a senator before I'm 30
I need someone
[sung]
Serious
Less of a Marilyn, more a Jackie
Serious
Somebody classy and not too tacky
[Elle, spoken]
What?!
[Warner]
Okay, that came out wrong...
Baby, let's both be strong
I mean, we've known all along...
[Elle]
Just shut up!
What does that mean, I'm not a Jackie?
I'm not serious?
But I'm seriously in love with you
[Warner]
Baby, my future's all planned
I've got some dreams to make true
I thought that you'd understand
It's time to get serious
It's time to get serious

[Warner]
We both know why we're here
I see it in your eyes
I guess it calms my fear
To know it's not a surprise
I thought one look at you
Lookin' like a dream come true
Would leave me speechless like you always do
But we're now we're wide awake
We've got some plans to make
Let's take some action, baby
So baby give me your hand
I've got some dreams to make true
I've got the future all planned
It's time to get serious
Time to get serious with you

my thoughts
I did this right after Positive (which had 13 variations) so I am very grateful this only had 2 versions!
I love this song so much (like I say for every one of them) but this just has a special energy to it that I just appreciate. The way Elle starts to sing and then Warner cuts her off is not only funny but perfectly sets up his character lol. I giggle every time I hear it because it's just so good. Not only that, but Elle's actions on stage (giving Warner her left hand instead of her right, wiggling her ring finger multiple times, copying his movements) do the same thing. She wants it so bad but he's not paying attention!
The scene in the movie is much more direct, I feel like he really does try to let her down gently in the musical. Their relationship and Warner entirely is something I'll have to save for another page, but I like how (aside from in the OBC recording, where most of the dialouge is cut) he does even say that he talked to his parents about marrying Elle, but that they didn't like that idea. This is only implied in the movie.
The demo highlights this more that Warner was just with Elle because he knew that she wasn't the type of person his parents approved of, but stayed with her anyways. He knew that she was in it for real ("your love has been so pure") but he was never going to be truly serious about her and is now owning up to that ("I'm gonna make things right").
Technically, there were a few changes between the very first few shows and the OBC recording, but him not saying "it's" a second time at some point doesn't feel justifyiable enough to make more entries...
